Madison, WI 53705 Mifflin Street CooperativeThe Mifflin St. Cooperative has run continuously from 1969 to the present. The cooperative was formed when the last family owned grocery store in the neighborhood closed its doors. Neighborhood residents did not want a chain convenience store, and thus formed their own cooperative. Since that time, the Mifflin St. Cooperative has had a strong political and social presence in Madison. The goal of the cooperative is to support economic alternatives to the monopoly capitalist economic structure by having a store that is owned by members and run by workers in a non-hierarchical collective. The cooperative has about 2000 members, and still functions as both a business and a social and political center for Madison students, activists, and neighborhood residents. Foods supplied and information provided represent the coops’ political commitment. Mifflin St. Cooperative donates food and support for community events and to sustainable farm and food initiatives. Hours of operation: 9am- 9pm Mon-Fri; 9am-8pm
weekends. Mt Horeb General Food Store Co-opThe Mt. Horeb General Food Store Co-op began as a health food store, later becoming a food cooperative in the 1970s. The store supplies organic produce, and purchases produce from local growers whenever possible. There are approximately 80 families who are members of the coop. Members either pay a fee or work to cover their coop membership. Address: Mt. Horeb General Store Co-op; 517
Springdale Street; Mount Horeb, WI 53572 Nature's BakeryNature's Bakery is a worker owned, collectively managed bakery business, specializing in organic whole grain baked goods. Eight worker-owners currently manage operations, baking healthy, whole-grain breads, granola, cookies, calzones, and vegetarian burgers. Former bakers remain shareholders in the collective, so over 50 current and former members participate in maintaining the collective structure. This ownership structure protects Nature's from being bought or sold. Nature's Bakery markets its whole grain breads directly through its retail store on Williamson Street. Breads and other baked goods are also available at selected grocery co-ops like the Mifflin Street Co-op, the Williamson St. Co-op, Magic Mill Natural Foods, and the Jenifer Street Market. member Regent Market Co-opThe Regent Street Co-op (formerly the Regent Food Market) became a cooperative in 1998, with guidance and support from the Williamson Street Co-op and Madison Community Co-ops. Serving the Monroe and Regents Street neighborhoods, this small market has gradually phased organic and locally grown foods onto its shelves. While other stores work toward streamlining and creating economies of scale, Regent St. considers the neighborhood its mainstay and determines product line based on neighborhood shoppers’ needs. The store has a community reinvestment program, charitable activities, and provides information about food nutrition and sustainability issues.
