Passing Along Farm Knowledge: A Mentor-Intern Handbook for Dairy and Livestock Farmers

Posted February 2012

Mentors are more than just teachers; they are learning partners with their interns. Both mentors and interns should set personal goals in order to make the most of their time together.

This handbook includes a wealth of practical information for both mentors and interns. Topics include:

  • Making a match
  • Goal setting and evaluation
  • Teaching and learning guidelines
  • Things to watch out for
  • Communication and conflict resolution
  • Ending the internship

An internship can take on a formal or informal tone, depending on farmer preference. This handbook outlines a more structured internship, but its content can also be utilized in informal settings, such as when an experienced farmer advises someone who has already begun to farm.

This handbook is a work in progress. If you have ideas about how we can make it even more useful for farmers and interns, please contact Dick Cates with your feedback: rlcates@wisc.edu.
