Cover Crops Workshop

On October 1, about 50 Extension agents, soil conservationists, and county soil and water department staff packed the meeting room at the Hancock Agricultural Research Station to learn about using cover crops in Wisconsin. The morning was devoted to presentations on a variety of cover crop applications, including a talk by CIAS staff member John Hendrickson on special considerations for using cover crops in home gardens. In the afternoon, the group toured research plots testing perennial cover crops in vegetable production. Participants also visited a large processing vegetable farm that uses cover crops to protect soils over the winter and prevent wind damage to young carrot plantings. The workshop was organized by CIAS staff member Diane Mayerfeld with funding from the USDA SARE Program.
