Badgerland Produce Auction tour

Posted September 2008

Institutional and retail food buyers from around Wisconsin joined CIAS Associate Director Michelle Miller for a visit to the the Badgerland Produce Auction in Montello on August 18. More than 200 farmers pool their produce for sale at this auction, which runs 2-3 times weekly, depending on the season. Miller learned that the auction offers order/buyer services, where a company may place a bid order over the phone/fax in advance, indicating product, quantity and price ceiling. Then an auction employee will bid on the company’s behalf, with product delivery available. For the first time, companies can pre-order for next year a specified quantity of product at a set price. The Institutional Food Market Coalition, through the Dane County Planning and Development Department, organized the auction tour.
