University of Wisconsin Will Host First Organic Agriculture Field Day

field dayThe University of Wisconsin Agricultural Research Station at Arlington will host its first organic field day on Thursday, August 30, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., presenting current UW research on organic weed management, cover and companion crops, soil quality, variety selection, vegetable crop trials, and no-till organic production.

Organic production is an increasingly significant segment of Wisconsin agriculture. To address the unique production issues associated with organic management, several research projects are underway at University of Wisconsin Agricultural Research Stations and on participating growers’ farms. These projects will be highlighted at this field day.

Beginning at 3:00 p.m., University of Wisconsin faculty will conduct field tours to examine ongoing research of fertility management strategies, organic soybean variety trials, organic corn seed treatments, cover crop options, and no-till organic production using crimped rye.

After the tours, additional discussion of research projects will take place at the public events building. Topics for discussion will include organic processing vegetables, organic vegetable variety selection, cover crops for organic vegetable production, and weed management strategies. UW’s roller-crimper for no-till production, fabricated using the design plans from the Rodale Institute, will be displayed as well. Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m.

The Arlington Research Station is located on Hwy. 51, about 5 miles south of Arlington and 15 miles north of Madison. Watch for "Field Day" signs.
